CRUISEMASTER × BOSCH · RHINOMAX SAFETY UPGRADE

ABS-Enabled Braking System Quick Guide

This guide combines key information from the Cruisemaster ABS Enabled drum brake system and the Bosch Trailer Safety Control (TSC) module. Working together, they deliver ABS-like wheel control, sway mitigation and enhanced trailer stability for your Rhinomax camper.

Important: This system is an optional upgrade and is only compatible with Cruisemaster ABS-enabled drum brakes. It does not operate with disc brake packages.

🧭 What the ABS-Enabled System Does

The Rhinomax ABS upgrade uses Cruisemaster’s ABS-ready drum brake hardware and wheel-speed sensors, combined with a Bosch TSC control unit mounted on the trailer. The result is smarter braking and a more stable towing experience.

1

Trailer Anti-Lock Braking

Wheel-speed sensors monitor each hub and reduce brake force if a wheel begins to lock, helping maintain grip and steering control during heavy or emergency braking.

2

Bosch TSC Sway Control

The Bosch Trailer Safety Control module continuously monitors trailer movement and selectively applies the brakes to counteract sway and yaw before it becomes dangerous.

3

Integrated Stability Logic

By comparing wheel speeds with acceleration and yaw signals, the system can distinguish between normal cornering and true instability, intervening only when required.

4

Enhanced Off-Road Control

On loose surfaces, the ABS function reduces the chance of a wheel fully locking up, helping keep the trailer tracking behind the tow vehicle on corrugations and steep descents.

⚙️ How the System Operates

A simplified overview of how Cruisemaster drum brakes and Bosch TSC work together on your Rhinomax.

1. Sensing & Monitoring

  • Wheel-speed sensors on the ABS drum hubs measure individual wheel speeds.
  • The Bosch TSC ECU reads acceleration and yaw-rate signals.
  • Trailer plug and brake controller provide a conventional brake command from the tow vehicle.

2. Control & Intervention

  • If a wheel decelerates too quickly → ABS cycles brake pressure to that wheel.
  • If sway or rapid yaw is detected → TSC applies proportionate braking side-to-side.
  • If instability escalates → the system can apply firmer, balanced braking to re-stabilise the rig.

3. Driver Remains in Charge

  • The system works transparently behind the scenes.
  • No special switch is required in normal use.
  • Your tow vehicle’s brake controller settings still govern overall trailer braking level.

Think of it as a trailer-side “co-pilot” for braking and stability: it doesn’t replace the driver, but it reacts faster than human reflexes when a wheel locks or sway begins to develop.

🚦 TSC Intervention Levels

The Bosch TSC system typically responds in stages, depending on how severe the instability is.

Stage 1 — Early Sway Correction

Light, targeted braking corrects small sway movements before they are clearly felt in the tow vehicle, helping to keep the rig calm and composed.

Stage 2 — Active Stability Control

If sway builds, TSC applies stronger, alternating brake inputs to bring the trailer back in line with the tow vehicle and reduce yaw.

Stage 3 — Emergency Stabilisation

In severe cases, the system can command firm trailer braking to quickly reduce speed and straighten the rig, working alongside the driver’s steering and braking.

⚠️ Compatibility & Limitations

Important information to understand before relying on the system.

Compatible Hardware Only

This system is designed specifically for Cruisemaster ABS-enabled drum brake assemblies. It is not compatible with disc brake setups or non-ABS drums.

If your Rhinomax is fitted with disc brakes or standard (non-ABS) drums, the Bosch TSC unit and ABS functions will not operate, even if installed.

Requires Bosch TSC Module (Optional Upgrade)

The advanced ABS and stability features described here are available only when the trailer is fitted with the Bosch Trailer Safety Control (TSC) module as a factory or authorised upgrade. Without TSC, the brakes function as standard electric trailer brakes.

Not a Substitute for Safe Towing Practices

No electronic system can overcome:

  • Incorrect weight distribution or insufficient tow-ball download.
  • Tyres that are under-inflated, damaged or mismatched.
  • Excessive speed for conditions or poor driver judgement.

Treat ABS/TSC as an extra layer of protection, not a licence to tow beyond safe limits.

Power & Electrical Dependence

If trailer power is isolated, batteries are flat, or wiring is damaged, the TSC module and ABS logic may not operate. The brakes will still respond to the tow vehicle’s brake controller, but without the added stability and anti-lock functions.

🛠️ Troubleshooting & Common Symptoms

Use these checks before booking a service with Cruisemaster, Bosch, or Rhinomax.

ABS/TSC Seems Inactive
  • Confirm your camper actually has the ABS drum brake upgrade and Bosch TSC fitted.
  • Check trailer plug connection and brake controller wiring at the tow vehicle.
  • Inspect visible wiring to wheel-speed sensors for damage or disconnection.
  • Ensure trailer battery is on and fuses/breakers for the TSC supply are intact.
Trailer Feels Nervous or Unstable
  • Check tyre pressures (tow vehicle and trailer) and adjust to recommended levels.
  • Verify tow-ball weight is within recommended range (typically 10–15% of trailer ATM).
  • Re-pack heavy gear low and forward; avoid heavy loads at the extreme rear.
  • Reduce speed, particularly in high crosswinds or when being overtaken by trucks.
Warning Lights or Error Messages (if supported)
  • Safely pull over and visually inspect the trailer harness and connectors.
  • Disconnect and reconnect the trailer plug to reset electrical contact.
  • If warnings persist, the TSC module may require diagnostic scanning by a suitable service agent.

🧱 Safe Towing & Maintenance Tips

Good habits that let your ABS/TSC system do its best work.

⚖️

Weight & Balance

Maintain correct tow-ball download and keep heavy items low and forward. A well-balanced trailer gives the stability system a solid foundation to work from.

🛞

Tyres, Bearings & Brakes

Keep tyres in good condition, bearings correctly adjusted and brakes serviced to manufacturer intervals. Electronic aids cannot overcome mechanical neglect.

🚙

Drive Within the Conditions

Slow down on corrugations, in the wet, or in strong winds. ABS/TSC assists when things go wrong, but smooth, conservative driving prevents most events altogether.
