Roof Air Conditioner Quick Guide
Simple Rhinomax-specific instructions for everyday use of your Webasto Cool Top Trail roof air conditioner. Use this guide for basic operation, care and troubleshooting. For full technical details and installation requirements, download the official Webasto manual below.
⚙️ Basic Operation (Rhinomax Edition)
Follow these steps for everyday cooling and heating when you’re plugged into mains power or a suitable generator.
Power & Pre-Checks
Make sure you have a proper 230 V supply (park power or correctly sized inverter/generator), the roof unit’s air inlets and outlets are clear, and all windows, doors and hatches are mostly closed for best performance.
Cooling the Cabin
On the remote, press ON, set MODE → COOL, choose your temperature (around 22–24 °C is ideal) and set the fan to AUTO or HIGH. The compressor may take up to 3 minutes to start – this is normal.
Heating (Heat Pump Mode)
Press MODE → HEAT and set the desired temperature above room temperature. In very cold weather, the unit may pause and display “dF” while it defrosts the outdoor coil – it will resume heating automatically.
Safe Use & Condensation
Don’t operate the unit while driving or near flammable vapours. Expect some condensation water on the roof during humid conditions – this is normal. If water drips inside, see the troubleshooting section below.
🕹 Using the Remote & Modes
Quick overview of the key buttons you’ll use most often on the handheld remote control.
Power, Mode & Fan
- ON/OFF – start or stop the system.
- MODE – cycle through COOL, HEAT, FAN, DRY and AUTO.
- FAN – set fan speed to LOW, MED, HIGH or AUTO (AUTO is only in COOL/HEAT).
- ▲ / ▼ – adjust set temperature (16–30 °C in COOL/HEAT/DRY).
Clock, Timer & Sleep
- Use SET TIME to set the clock, then program ON/OFF timers for automatic start/stop.
- TIMER – activate ON, OFF or ON+OFF daily scheduling.
- SLEEP – gently adjusts temperature overnight to save power and reduce noise.
Touch Panel Control
If the remote is missing, tap the touch button on the ceiling unit to cycle through OFF → COOL → FAN → HEAT. The default setpoint is 24 °C with high fan. Use the remote again to fine-tune temperature and fan speed.
🔧 Troubleshooting & Fault Codes
If something doesn’t feel right, run through these quick checks before calling support.
Common Problems & Quick Fixes
- No display / won’t turn on: Check the van’s RCD / circuit breakers, verify 230 V power is present, make sure the extension lead is fully unwound, and replace the remote batteries if needed.
- Not cooling or heating: Confirm the correct mode (COOL or HEAT) is selected and the set temperature is below/above room temperature. Allow a few minutes for the compressor to start.
- Poor performance: Clean the return filters, increase fan speed, close doors/windows and curtains, and check that the outdoor unit isn’t blocked by leaves or dust.
- Water dripping inside: Check condensate outlets on the roof are clear, ensure the vehicle is parked reasonably level (< 5°), and verify the unit is firmly sealed to the roof.
Fault Codes on Ceiling Display
The ceiling panel may show simple fault codes. A few of the common ones are:
- E0: Communication fault between indoor and outdoor units.
- E1 / E2 / E3: Temperature sensor fault (room, indoor or outdoor coil).
- E4: No cooling effect – possible refrigerant or compressor issue (service required).
- E5: Outdoor coil temperature outside normal range. May be fan or airflow related.
- dF: Not a fault – unit is in defrost mode during HEAT in low ambient temperatures.
If a fault code stays on after a power cycle or the unit behaves abnormally, please contact Rhinomax or a qualified Webasto technician.
🛠️ Preventative Maintenance Tips
A few simple habits will dramatically improve comfort, reliability and lifespan of your roof air conditioner.
Clean Filters Regularly
Slide out the return air filters and wash them in warm soapy water, then dry and reinstall. Check at least every week in heavy use. Never run the unit without filters.
Check Mounting Bolts
After the first few months and then yearly, have the four roof mounting bolts checked and re-torqued to spec. This helps maintain a good seal and prevents movement on rough tracks.
Use It & Keep It Clean
Run the unit for 20–30 minutes every 6 months even in the off-season. Keep the roof around the unit clean and free from leaves, dust and debris. Replace remote batteries if the display fades.
