OGO Origin Composting Toilet Quick Guide
This guide explains how to install, use and maintain your OGO Origin composting toilet in a Rhinomax camper. It focuses on day-to-day operation, power and ventilation basics, and how to manage waste cleanly and safely. For full specifications, wiring diagrams and detailed troubleshooting, download the complete OGO manual below.
⚙️ Basic Operation (Rhinomax Edition)
Understand what the OGO is doing so you can spot problems quickly and keep smells under control.
How the System Works
The OGO is a separating composting toilet:
- Patented bowl and trap-door divert urine to a 9 L bottle or optional drain kit.
- Solids fall into a compost medium (coir peat) in the sealed solids bin.
- A low-draw 12 V DC fan constantly ventilates the unit to control odour and moisture.
Used correctly, the solids dry and partially compost, while urine is managed separately.
Power & Agitation Cycle
The OGO uses a 12 V DC power agitator:
- Press the power button once after each solid use.
- The agitator runs a 45-second cycle mixing waste with coir.
- Average draw is around 1.8 A during the cycle (10 A max rating).
The fan runs continuously and is your best “is power on?” indicator in day-to-day use.
Urine Bottle & Level Sensor
Urine normally goes to the front 9 L bottle:
- A red LED indicator comes on when the sensor detects the bottle is ~85% full.
- Empty the bottle every 24–48 hours or whenever the light comes on.
- Always fit the supplied cap before carrying the bottle out of the camper.
A drain kit can be fitted to send urine to a grey/black tank instead of using the bottle.
Solids Bin Capacity & Limits
When set up correctly, one solids bin typically lasts:
- About 25–30 uses before it needs to be emptied.
- Medium should sit just below the agitator arms at start-up.
- Mix should feel like light, moist soil, never wet or sloppy.
Over-filling or letting liquids into the bin will shorten capacity and can damage the agitator.
🧱 Installation Overview in a Rhinomax Camper
Key points for mounting, power and ventilation. Always follow the full manual and your installer’s advice.
Floor Mounting
The OGO is secured through four base mounting holes into a solid floor:
- Remove the drawer, bottle and solids bin to access mounting points.
- Use the supplied stainless screws; do not overtighten into timber or composite floors.
- If using a drain kit, cut the marked drain area in the base before bolting down.
In Rhinomax layouts, the unit is mounted so the drawer can be fully opened for easy bottle removal.
Wet-Bath Installations
The OGO is not designed to sit in standing water:
- Base must be raised at least 25 mm above the shower tray to keep the motor dry.
- Use a dedicated wet-bath cover or shower curtain to keep water off the unit.
- Ensure good extraction so the shower space can dry between uses.
Extra moisture will shorten compost life and can lead to mould and odour if not controlled.
Power Options
Standard Rhinomax installs use 12 V DC house battery power:
- Wire red to +12 V, black to negative via a fused circuit.
- Always confirm polarity before connecting; wrong polarity can damage electronics.
- A 240 V AC adapter can be used where mains is available (optional accessory).
Disconnect power before doing any work on wiring or internal components.
Ventilation & Drain Kit
Effective ventilation is critical for odour and moisture control:
- Use the supplied vent hose to an exterior vent or suitable duct.
- Protect outside openings with a shell vent and insect screen.
- In high-humidity climates, a higher-CFM fan may be recommended.
The optional OGO drain kit allows urine to bypass the bottle and go directly to a tank or drain line.
🚽 Everyday Use – OGO Origin
Simple steps so every family member knows exactly what to do.
Getting the Solids Bin Ready
Before first use or after emptying:
- Hydrate a coir peat brick in a bucket with warm water until crumbly and moist.
- Add enough medium to fill the solids bin to just below the agitator arms.
- Store leftover coir in an airtight container for next time.
Do not use sawdust, wood ash or cat litter – they pack too tightly and can jam the agitator.
Using the Toilet
For each use:
- Lift lid and lightly mist the bowl with compost toilet cleaner or a 25% vinegar / 75% water mix.
- For solids, pull the handle straight forward to open the trap door, then close fully when finished.
- Press the power button once to run the 45-second agitation cycle.
- Lightly mist the bowl again after use.
Men should sit and lean forward so urine goes into the front diversion area rather than the solids bin.
Toilet Paper & What Not to Add
To keep the agitator moving freely:
- Use unscented, 2-ply biodegradable toilet paper.
- Limit to 2–3 squares at a time so paper doesn’t bunch up and snag.
- Paper used for urine can go into a separate bin if you want maximum solids capacity.
- Never add wipes, sanitary products, cigarettes or other non-compostable items.
Emptying Solids & Urine Safely
When the solids bin is full (or after long trips):
- Empty into a compostable bag for landfill, or into a dedicated human-waste compost system.
- In remote areas, bury waste in a deep hole only where local regulations allow.
- Do not use human-waste compost on food crops.
Urine can be poured into an approved dump point, toilet, or dispersed under trees in accordance with local rules.
🔧 Troubleshooting – Quick Checks
Run through these simple checks before assuming there is a major fault.
No power or agitator won’t run
- Confirm your 12 V supply is on and the fuse has not blown.
- Check polarity at the terminals: red to +12 V, black to negative.
- Make sure the fan is running; if not, there may be a wiring or supply issue.
- If the motor still will not run, inspect internal connectors for loose wires.
If the issue persists, disconnect power and contact Rhinomax or the OGO support team with photos of the wiring.
Odour, flies or visible moisture
- Check that the vent fan is operating and ducting is not kinked or blocked.
- Confirm the compost medium is moist, not wet; add dry coir if it looks muddy.
- Avoid liquids entering the solids bin – review how the toilet is being used.
- For flies, a pyrethrum-based spray through the hatch for several days is recommended.
Red bottle-full light always on or never on
- Empty and rinse the bottle, then check whether the light still stays on.
- Inspect the liquid level sensor for scaling or residue and clean gently.
- If needed, follow the manual’s steps to re-calibrate sensor sensitivity.
A permanently ignored full-bottle light can result in overflow into the drain pan and surrounding area.
Agitator jammed or struggling
- Check for excess toilet paper or foreign objects in the solids bin.
- Ensure compost level is not above the agitator arms; remove some medium if over-filled.
- Never place hands in the solids bin while the motor is running.
If you cannot free the agitator easily, stop using the unit and seek service advice to avoid motor damage.
🛠️ Preventative Maintenance – OGO Origin
Small habits that keep the toilet odour-free and reliable over the long term.
Regular Cleaning
Wipe the bowl and seat weekly with a mild cleaner or vinegar solution. Use citric-acid or CLR® occasionally to remove urine scale from the bottle and trap areas.
Ventilation & Moisture Control
Periodically inspect the vent fan, hose and exterior vent for dust, debris and insect nests. In very humid conditions, keep the bathroom well-ventilated to help the solids bin stay dry.
Medium & Solids Bin Care
Refresh the coir medium when capacity is reached. Leave a small amount of old compost in the bin to seed the new batch. Avoid disinfectants inside the solids bin – they kill the microbes that do the composting work.
